Police say a 22-year-old man stole a delivery truck and recklessly drove into a bus at 5:30 AM this morning in Greenwich Village. The crash killed the 49-year-old bus driver and injured at least four other people including both passengers and pedestrians.
According to police, the 22-year-old driver of the stolen truck has not been charged yet, but will likely be charged after being treated for his injuries at the local Bellevue Hospital. Two pedestrians and one bus passenger were also injured in the tragic crash. Additionally, a person on a scooter and a man working at a vendor stand was also hit by the out-of-control driver and treated for their injuries.
When the collision between the stolen truck and city bus occurred, both vehicles were thrown into scaffolding, which collapsed around them. Several parked cars were also damaged in the wreck.
Authorities have released the name of the fallen bus driver, William Pena of Hillside, New Jersey. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
