When driving on highways and freeways, most people give semi-trucks a wide berth, and rightly so.   Because of their large size, semi trucks and similarly large vehicles are inherently more dangerous than the average car on the road today.  As a result, truck drivers are expected to operate their trucks with a heightened level of responsibility when behind the wheel.  Legally speaking, truck drivers owe a reasonable duty to both pedestrians and other drivers to prevent truck accidents from happening.  Employers may also be held liable for not providing adequate training to their employees or allowing unsafe vehicles or machinery to be used.

This past Monday, at approximately 6:45 am, a tractor trailer truck was upended while driving northbound on I-65 in northwestern Indiana.  The truck, driven by 31-year-old Khurshid A. Makhmudov, was owned by the Enroute Transporting Company.  It was carrying bottles and cans of Miller Lite beer.

According to the Indiana State Highway Patrol, Mr. Makhmudov was driving his truck while attempting to adjust his radio.  However, in doing so, Mr. Makhmudov took his eyes off the road for several crucial seconds.  While he looked down, his semi-truck was listing lazily to the left.  When he looked up again, he saw that the concrete median strip was dangerously close to the side of his truck.  He panicked and tried to pull the truck back to the center of his lane.  Unfortunately, his attempted correction was overly aggressive.  As a result, Mr. Makhmudov lost control of his truck, which collided with the median on the right-hand side of the highway, rolled and slid about 200 feet.

Mr. Makhmudov was cited for unsafe lane movement and was taken to the Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point, Indiana, to be treated for a forearm injury.  Thankfully, no one else was injured in the truck accident.
