Eighteen-year-old Miles Hill has filed a lawsuit against FedEx and the owners of the charter bus he was riding in on April 10, 2014, during a fiery and deadly interstate crash. The crash killed ten people, including five students and the drivers of both vehicles. The charter bus had been carrying a group of high school students to visit a nearby college when the crash occurred. The FedEx driver lost control of the mail-carrying big rig, colliding with the charter bus on the 5 Freeway in Orland. Both vehicles caught on fire after the collision.
Hill was sitting directly behind the bus driver when the crash occurred. He suffered a broken collarbone and second degree burns. According to his lawsuit, the charter bus failed to have adequate safety measures and emergency exits installed on the bus. The teenager had to kick out a bus window in order to escape the fire. In addition, his lawsuit claims FedEx failed to properly inspect the truck and that the driver drove the truck negligently, recklessly and/or carelessly. To date, victims of the crash and their families have filed five separate lawsuits.
