Truck-Bus Collision Results in 29 Deaths on South Africa’s “Road of Death.”

Moloto Road in South Africa, grimly nicknamed the “Road of Death,” is near Kwaggafontein in Mpumalanga province. The so-called Road of Death was the site of a massive collision between a bus and a truck that resulted in the wrongful deaths of 29 people and personal injuries to at least 30 more individuals this past Monday, November 11, 2013.

According to local government officials, a truck travelling at a high speed struck a bus filled with passengers on the road some 100 miles northeast of the capital Johannesburg. The Road of Death lived up to its name as 29 people were killed in the truck crash. The bus involved in the crash belonged to Johannesburg-based Putco, Ltd.

Government officials, including the country’s president Jacob Zuma, have called for a full government investigation of the tragic trucking accident, as well as a broader investigation into the reasons for such massive motor vehicle accidents on that particular road. As President Zuma said in a statement, “the fact that this particular road has gained notoriety in the deaths of our people means there’s something wrong that we need to address together.”

According to government officials, traffic accidents are costing the South African economy $29 billion annually. Calls for a government response to the problem have been ongoing for some time. They intensified after a truck crash near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal Province that resulted in 24 wrongful deaths.
