Every two minutes, another person is injured by a drunk driver. An alarming two out of every three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash sometime during their lifetime, whether as a driver or as a passenger and victim. Despite the often fatal consequences of driving under the influence, people continue to drink and drive. Nine-year-old Emiliano Zuniga-Ramirez was killed on Friday, August 7th, in a devastating truck accident. The boy’s mother, 34-year-old Francisca Ramirez, was attempting to cross a busy intersection when the deadly crash occurred. According to people who know the intersection best, the intersection has always been an accident waiting to happen. Route 331 in Marshall County, Indiana is a busy two-lane highway. The Ramirez’s live in a subdivision that can only be accessed by a road intersecting route 331.
Ramirez attempted to cross both lanes and continue straight on the intersecting roadway. Sadly, her car pulled into the path of an oncoming pickup truck. The truck hit her vehicle on the passenger side, where her son was riding. Emiliano was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Ramirez was severely injured in the collision, and was transported to the Bremen Hospital for treatment.
Police are still investigating the accident, but have arrested the driver of the pickup truck. According to WNDU 16 News, the driver of the pickup, 55-year-old Julian Valadez, was arrested for drunk driving and for operating a vehicle without a license. He suffered only minor injuries in the collision, and has since been released from jail on bond.
